Our guest speaker, Max Bervig, is the lead farmer at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Farms.

Max had good information about how they do things at Los Poblanos, and how we can do similar things in our own gardens. He suggested using hoop houses to start seedlings and propagate plants, but recommended against using metal raised beds to grow because they get too hot in our weather. He uses compost tea made from fish emulsion, molasses, castile soap, and cayenne pepper to fertilize plants and keep the pests away. Where as they compost acres of foliage and manure at the end of the growing season, he suggested we dig compost holes in our gardens.
Los Poblanos is famous for their lavender fields and we learned about lavender lifetime, pruning, species, and harvesting the flowers. Lots of insight into what Los Poblanos grows and the products they make from them.
Thanks to Max for taking time out of his busy summer schedule to come speak to us!
